New UK Caribbean TV Game Show set to break the mould

New UK Caribbean TV Game Show set to break the mould

Over the past twelve months, the film industry has experienced a marked improvement in the number of American films at the cinema staring people of colour such as Butler, 12 Years a Slave, Mandella, The Best Man Holiday, of which 12 years a Slave, directed by Steve McQueenis tipped to win an Oscar for best Director. However in the UK, according to Shanice Lindsay of Platinum Cat Productions A lot more still needs to be done to address the lack of UK films staring people of colour both at the cinema and on our TV screens.

As far as TV game shows go, you would be hard pressed to find a UK game show featuring a line-up of Caribbean contestants. Well things are possibly about to change. Shanice Lindsay is one of the very few Black female film directors in the UK in an industry that is still very male dominated. It is
widely known that “Women in the film industry are still woefully underrepresented to this day” The British Film Alliance and even more so for women of colour.

Nevertheless, Shanice has gone against the grain to make her mark as an independent UK female film maker. Not to be deterred by a lack of funds she set up Platinum Cat Productions, an independent film making company and with a combination of self financing and local charitable support, she successfully co-write and co-directed a short drama film called ‘Choices’, a film about a group of wayward teenagers whose youthful decisions significantly impact their adult lives. The film Choices is being promoted in schools and screened in community centers as a learning resource in diverting young people away from drugs and the bling lifestyle. She also subsequently went on to make her first feature movie ‘Surviving in da Hood’.

Surviving in da Hood is a powerful and inspirational coming of age story set on the mean side of the streets of urban London. The film presents a unique snap shot into the lives of five ambitious youngsters as they struggle to overcome their personal adversities and circumstances to make something of themselves. The story centres round Drake, a gifted and fast rising rapper with a dark secret. Wanted by both the police and rival gang members, his chance of success could have serious consequences for him and his loved ones. Despite the challenges she has already started work on her newest creation which will be a dating game show featuring a lineup of star quality people of colour contestants. The dating game show ‘Swarve Dates will be filmed at the Cottons Restaurant Islington, a high end Caribbean restaurant and night club setting with some initial and post contestant date interviews also taking place in venues such as wine bars and edited for TV broadcast. At present there are no TV game shows of this type and she hopes it will bring the breakthrough she is looking for.

When asked about Platinum CAT Productions it was described as a platform for local Creative, Artistic and Talented individuals to shine. The Indiegogo campaign is hoped to raise the funds needed to springboard this independent female directors and for exposing more undiscovered talent. She calls on the community to support the Indiegogo campaign for Surviving in da Hoodthat will go live later this month.

They are also hoping to attract the interest and support of businesses for their new entertaining dating game show. The game show has been designed to incorporate the universally appealing and entertaining Caribbean culture through reggae music, dance styles, vocal abilities, street language, exuberant fashion and culture.
