‘Surviving in da Hood’
A break
through within the UK Black film industry
I happen to attend a free film screening to watch ‘Surviving in da Hood’
at Goldsmith University on Thursday 10th
October 2013. I found this movie to be inspiring, funny entertaining and along
with the music and sound tracks it made it a great movie to see.
This production brings an insight into the talent, struggle and success
of young
people from urban communities living in the UK .
After the movie I had the opportunity to meet and speak with the
Directors, Shanice Lindsay and Errol Tucker from Platinum CAT Productions. I
found them to be inspiring and ambitious to have risen to the challenge of
making such a big production.
I feel there is a huge market for black urban talent in the UK and
on the big screen. What Platinum Cat Productions are doing is just excellent
work. I also congratulate Starlight Music Academy
on the excellent musical sound track throughout the movie. I’m looking forward
to getting a copy of the sound track CD.
I also found out that the ‘Surviving in da Hood’ DVDs will be out by
Christmas so I hope to get my hands on a few copies of these too, for Christmas
prezies.

Platinum
Cat Productions is excited to announce that the first private screening of their independent feature film ‘Surviving in da Hood’ was a huge success. The event
took place on Tuesday 20th August at the Leander Community Centre in
London. The venue played host to rising stars such as the likes of Mr Midas and
Dean Marsh; alongside VIP guests Paul Canoville- the first black professional
footballer to be signed to Chelsea FC and Melissa Bell –
former member of 80’s R&B group Soul II Soul.
The film,
which was produced and directed by Shanice Lindsay and co-written alongside
Errol Tucker, is an honest reflection of the challenges that numerous
individuals face whilst growing up in London.
Shanice
Lindsay has dedicated the last fifteen years to volunteering at Starlight Music
Academy a charity organisation that gives disadvantaged youths the space to
flourish and excel despite difficult backgrounds. ‘Surviving in the Hood’ a
feature length movie that showcases the creative talent of undiscovered
performers is a great testament to the focus and drive of young people today.
This is in contrast to the messages surrounding the very same groups portrayed
in some media as unproductive.
Shanice
states, “Not only does the narrative aim to inspire, but the production of the
film itself highlights the wealth of talent within our communities and is
creating an outlet for it to flourish.” She
says the biggest challenge in making ‘Surviving in da Hood’ was finances, hence
why they are preparing to launch a fund raising campaign via Indegogo, an online
fund raising platform for worthy causes.
The private screening
confirmed our beliefs that ‘Surviving in da Hood’ is a honest, funny and real portrayal
of young people’s lives. The screening helped to gain the support from Melissa
Bell who enjoyed the experience and describe it as “compelling, relevant and
positive”. She is excited to offer future support for their upcoming events and
is happy to spread the word about ‘Surviving in da Hood’.
Platinum Cat Productions would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who
attended last night's screening and a special thank you to Melissa Bell and Paul
Canoville.

Progress Update
Hi Guys,
I’ve been here in the
office since 10.30 this morning (even the bad weather couldn’t stop me) hard at
work making plans and writing material for our Indiegogo campaign. The music is
on, bright lights are shining, and we’ve even got a fan on because this room is
maintaining a ‘tropical climate’ in spite of the rain.
As one of the
volunteers for Starlight Music Academy, I’ve spent my morning and afternoon
looking at other film campaigns on the fundraising site to decide how to
structure our campaign, what key information we want to include, and what
‘perks’ we’re looking to bring to you lovely people. I was then assigned
sections to work on, and have been collating information about the cast members
and our ‘Dream’ for this project. Now, in my break, I’m sending you this
short message to let you know a bit about how we’re getting along, and will
continue to do so over the coming weeks!
Remember to keep in
touch with us if you have questions about the project, or getting involved, and
we will do the same J
Keeping you posted X

Putting British
Urban Film on the Map
London, UK – Aug 2013 -
Platinum CAT Productions makes
its feature film debut with 'Surviving in da Hood', a compelling and
inspirational story following five individuals as they struggle to make
something of themselves in spite of their circumstances. The film centres round
Drake, an up-and-coming rapper portrayed by Mr Midas, who is leading a double
life which has fatal consequences for his baby mother and friends. 'Surviving
in da Hood' provides a snapshot of the real adversities and pressing issues faced
by young people everyday in South East London, and across the UK.
Its creators, Shanice Lindsay
and Errol Tucker, saw the making of the film as a significant opportunity to
draft in and develop the abilities of young and emerging actors, filmmakers and
musicians. Their directorial debut has thus been a platform upon which the
likes of Mr Midas, an accomplished recording artist, actor and presenter known
from such things as Kiss TV/4Music, alongside a cast of young and exciting new
talent, can shine. ‘Surviving in da Hood’ will re-invigorate British Urban
Film, and contribute to the development of the Black British Film Industry.
To
launch 'Surviving in da Hood', Platinum CAT Productions are currently planning
a press event to be held at the BFI, to be followed by an exclusive red-carpet
premiere at Greenwich Odeon. They are in the fundraising stage of the
film project, and will be launching a campaign on Kickstarter and Indiegogo in
forthcoming months.
For further details about the
film project, or enquiries into the launch events, please contact Shanice
Lindsay at 07415 097 947 or info@platinumcatproductions.co.uk,
